King of the Jews

Come, see the King of the Jews!
What humble deliverance He did choose–
Eternal, all-powerful God, He
Sleeps now in helpless body.
Swaddled with cloths, He pillows His head
In a room not His own, a borrowed bed.
Look now, approaching the cave,
The outcast poor He came to save.
Bewildered faces, lit now with cheer:
“Could this be Messiah lying here?”
Gifts are offered of spices sweet
With which to anoint His head and feet.
See there, how shepherd, king, and lamb
Caress the hand of the Holy I Am.

Though out in a cave for want of room,
This firstborn of a virgin’s womb,
No rocks or stones could hope to hide
The glory of our God inside!
Roman weapons and Herod’s decree
Could never thwart what God says must be.
The Lord Himself the heavens rent,
His Own fair messengers He sent:
The light of star and angel voice
Proclaim to all the world, “Rejoice!”
The time of salvation has come to the earth,
Our King with us offers all men new birth.

Bewildered faces, wet now with tears:

Gifts are offered of spices sweet
With which to anoint His head and feet.
See there, our Shepherd, King, and Lamb,
The piercéd hand of Holy I Am.

Though out in a cave for want of room,
This firstborn from the earth’s cold womb,
No rocks or stones could hope to hide
The glory of our God inside!
Roman weapons and Herod’s decree
Could never thwart what God says must be!
The Lord Himself the seal has rent,
His Own fair messengers has sent:
The quaking ground and angel voice
Proclaim to all the world, “Rejoice!”
The time of salvation has come to the earth,
Our King with us offers all men new birth.
